The Dale Barlow Quintet | Tuesday 10 January

After five years overseas, master saxophonist Dale Barlow comes to The Underground - leading a band of long-term musical collaborators. Barlow has long been one of the leading lights of Modern Jazz in Australia - as well as forging an illustrious international career with greats such as Art Blakey, Cedar Walton, Chet Baker among many.

 This special night for NIMA reunites Dale with some of Australia’s finest in Warwick Alder - trumpet, Andrew Dickeson - drums, John Harkins - piano and Brendan Clarke - bass.

Leo Larratt Quartet | Tuesday 17 January

Leo Larratt has quickly established himself as a fine young musician within the Australian and international jazz world. The guitarist, originally from Newcastle, has been an active member of the Sydney music scene for almost three years. For the past 12 months Leo has been studying and playing in New York City, expanding his experience even further. Leo has become an in-demand player, renowned for his firm roots in the tradition of jazz and the blues, whilst bringing a fresh approach to the music. Leo will be joined by John Harkins who came to Australia 25years ago. Harkins is a product of the great Chicago/Detroit jazz piano tradition and has established himself in the front rank of the Sydney Jazz scene.

Dorian Mode with Toby Hall | Tuesday 24 January

Dorian Mode is a multi award-winning jazz musician who is as well known for his funny novels as his cool music! He first hit the jazz scene with the mighty Hammond B3 Organ. It earned him a record contract with EMI Records – one of the few Australian jazz artists to be signed to a major – releasing his debut CD ‘Rebirth of the Cool’ Dorian has since recorded numerous jazz CD’s and performed at leading jazz and fringe festivals nationally.

All the way from the USA Ty Cooper is joining the James Ryan Band for one night only!

Ty Cooper is known for her rich, classically trained voice, powerful stage presence and dedicated professionalism, Ty Cooper is, as the Las Vegas Times has called her, “the real deal”. Her impeccable showmanship and an easy command of jazz, sultry blues and sizzling swing styles, all wrapped up in flash and sass, guarantee a full house wherever Cooper graces the stage. A global performer, Cooper has sung in locales as varied as Caesar’s in Las Vegas, Chicago’s legendary Green Mill, Caveau de la Huchette (the oldest jazz club in Paris), and the opulent Wynn Hotel in Dubai. She has led multiple productions and bands, including Swing & Strings, Ty and the Wild Women Jazz Band, and The JazzShowcase with Shelly Yoelin Big Band, Close Encounters with Richie Cole, to name a few.

Among fellow musicians and music promoters Cooper is a beloved performer known for "that rich smoothness we all look for in a classic Jazz Vocalist." Ty Cooper is that rare breed of singer both musicians and audiences adore; a consummate professional who delivers every time she steps on stage.
