COAST Quintet

COAST has garnered acclaim far and wide for their innovative and textured approach to contemporary jazz. Their music is marked by a captivating musicality that seamlessly moves from delicate, to grungy, to cinematic, and everywhere in between, without ever jarring. Paul Derricott's deft drumming anchors their fantastical, energetic compositions, with an ability to constantly surprise while always maintaining a cohesive flow.  

COAST's previous releases—the self-titled debut (2018), "Skim" (2019), and the live album "Live 2023"—established them as one of the most exciting acts in Australian contemporary jazz. Their third record “Ember” not only reinforces this reputation, it elevates it to new heights.   

Paul Derricott, a Sydney/Gadigal-based drummer, composer, and bandleader, draws inspiration from the land and people around him. His compositions cherish melody and explore textures and rhythms without prejudice. With a broad palette of influences from the acoustic jazz pantheon to electro beat tapes, Derricott has worked extensively in contemporary music and jazz, touring nationally and internationally with artists such as Lanie Lane, the Beautiful Girls, Georgia Mooney, Aloe Blacc, Charenée Wade (USA), and Lakecia Benjamin (USA). He has composed and released albums as a leader in COAST, Arrow, and The Denominators, and as a sideman for Tiny Hearts, The Dave Jackson Quartet, and Felucca.
