About the Event
Sydney saxophonist and composer Damon Poppleton presents his take on the state of contemporary jazz today, performing original music alongside selected tunes from the jazz canon. Leading his quartet, Poppleton showcases a deeply personal connection to the jazz tradition—inspired and informed but he values of Count Basie and the artistry of modern saxophonists Dick Oatts and Jaleel Shaw. The quartet’s debut album, Substation Lookout (April 2024), features Poppleton’s original compositions and received 4.5 stars from Barry O’Sullivan (Fine Music Magazine) who praised it as “a handsome debut recording with some stellar moments displaying their obvious talent and premature sophistication.”
