The James Ryan Funktet brings a feast of funk, jazz, reggae, soul and ska inspired music and grooves influenced by John Coltrane, Roland Rahsaan Kirk, James Brown and Bob Marley.James Ryan is a Sydney based award-winning saxophonist, flute player, composer and band leader of The Subterraneans, 15-piece Sonic Mayhem Orchestra,
JR’s Soul Jazz Express, and much more. He has released 12 albums and toured Australia, India and Europe. He is also the co-director of Sydney-based ethical Jazz label Rippa Recordings. The Subterraneans’ self-titled debut album won the 2011 Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Blend Album. James Ryan’s fascination with improvisation and original jazz composition is reflected in his recordings and performances.
