About the Event
The James Ryan Funktet brings a feast of funk, jazz, reggae, soul and ska inspired music and grooves influenced by John Coltrane, Roland Rahsaan Kirk, James Brown and Bob Marley.
James Ryan is a Sydney based award-winning saxophonist, flute player, composer and band leader of The Subterraneans, 15-piece Sonic Mayhem Orchestra, JR’s Soul Jazz Express, and much more. Between the three ensembles he has released 12 albums and toured Australia, India and Europe. He is also the co-director of Sydney-based ethical Jazz label Rippa Recordings. The Subterraneans’ self-titled debut album won the 2011 Australian
Jazz Bell Award for Best Blend Album. James Ryan’s fascination with improvisation and original jazz composition is reflected in his recordings and performances.
