About the Event
Steve is one of Melbourne’s leading jazz pianists and renowned for collaborating with like-minded musicians who always bring a special joy and energy to every show. His career spans over four decades, multiple recordings (his outfit Mistaken Identity scored an APRA nomination), and countless performances at clubs and festivals around the country. He is also well-known as an inspirational teacher and mentor, his most successful protégées members of The Cat Empire.
This time, he’ll be joined on stage with two very different vocalists, both from the US of A.
Ty Cooper is seasoned and well-travelled musician; has performed all over the US & some European cities too. She has played with some of the jazz greats in the States - Stan Getz, Ray Brown, Jeff Hamlin, Eric Schneider, Richie Cole, Phil Woods, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, and countless other world class players across the States, especially Chicago, in some of the city’s major jazz venues: The Green Mill , Andy’s, the Jazz Showcase, The House of Blues. She is, as the Las Vegas Times has called her, “’The real deal’ offering impeccable showmanship and an easy command of jazz, sultry blues, and sizzling swing styles”.
At New Mexico Music Awards her album, I’m All For You won Best Jazz CD 2018.
Last year she won Best Vocal Performance at the same awards.
Lionel Cole hails from US Jazz royalty. The son of Freddy Cole, the nephew of Nat King Cole, he was bound for a great musical career. His many accolades include over 300 original works, performances with countless musical heavyweights such as Mariah Carey and Joss Stone, as well as producing numerous TV & film compositions. His musical style draws inspiration from Steve Wonder and Prince to name a few. He is a dynamic and engaging performer, a purveyor of many genres, from soul & funk to standards and the great American Songbook.
The NIMA enthusiasts are promised a sensational one-off jazz event that is not to be missed!
